I've struggled with depression for 6 years now and to be honest, it never really goes away. I get glimpses of what happiness feels like, but most days are filled with sadness. Working from home hasn't helped with my depression.
But the days I force myself out of the house or have human interaction helps. Everyone's journey is different. Recognizing the signs, reaching out, and attempted to change, makes you pretty awesome in my book.
Recognition of depression in yourself is the hardest part, then accepting there is a problem. For me, it was understanding what depression actually is, then learning what was needed for me. I created a system to help me feel better. Here are some ways to get you out of your rut quicker.
Create a To-Do List
Crossing things off my list definitely helps. Even if its changing out of your pajamas and keeping the kids alive. Put it on the list and cross it off.
Some days you will feel discourage, even overwhelmed. Break up your list in sections to keep yourself from crashing and becoming immobilized. Try listing things in a certain order like low to high priority, for starters.
Create or Re-site Affirmations
Hearing certain affirmations can be a powerful tool for motivation. The can make you feel inspired, while also addressing and meeting you needs as well. But you may have to be in the right space to receive them.
You see, as a single mom, I often get caught up in every day overwhelm and obstacles that are often thrown in my path that allows daily processes to become a blur. The use of affirmations can serve as a daily reminder to help bring that process back into focus.
Finding the Confidence to Ask for Help
As I stated before, recognition of depression is the hardest par, then telling someone. Once I felt okay to reach out to my family, it felt like a huge wight lifted. It's never easy at first. But if you're reaching out to ask for help sounds pretty amazing to me. Your friends, spouse, or relatives want to be there to support you. Let them!
Make a Self-Care Routine
A self-care routine list could have anything like taking a shower, getting dressed, putting on make up, or taking a walk outside. Nature and sunshine usually helps me. It's easy to do the slouchy sweats and never leave the house when you don't actually have to. But doing those things can really help you have a better day. So find the things that help you get going and feel better; put them on the list.
Above all, I still have my bad days and days I'm not wasting away. Your mental health takes daily work. Try looking forward to the future, which may seem impossible, but remember, baby steps will get you there. Good luck with your journey, you have many people rooting for you. I hope this helps!
