Does time management feel like a myth to you? In the hectic pace of a single moms life, it often feels like we'll never have the time to get all the things done. We have a never-ending to-do list, with not a lot of time to get them done.
You feel overwhelmed and you procrastinate some more, all the while you're piling more items onto your list. I'm sure you've read all the different articles for time management tips and they're not working, but have you ever stopped to think that you're not reading the right ones.
Time management for single moms is a lot different than it is for married moms. Unlike us, they have someone to share a load of responsibilities with, while you are left tackling it all on your own. So it's no wonder why you can't stick to those tips because they were not made for YOU.
Our lives are more overwhelming than those moms will ever know, especially for solo moms. There's the never-ending load of dishes, laundry, homework, cleaning, managing the bills, getting your kids to and from school. The list could go on and on because you are on your own.
Don't let all of that sike you out. There is a way to create a system that works for you and your family. Here are some awesome easy time management tips for single moms.
Tip #1 Break Your To-Do List Up for better time management!
If you try to bite off more than you can chew you are setting yourself up for failure automatically. You are already doing a job that requires two parents, on top of everything else, why would you try to burn yourself out? You are no good to your kids if you are exhausted and bad-tempered.
When you break up your list into sections by day you begin to feel less overwhelmed and more accomplished. You feel more productive with a list of five than a list of ten items or more. Also, with your plate so full, you are more likely to actually do the five items.
So depending on what day you actually start on your list, only list three to five items a day. Think of this like goal setting. I want you to hone in on specific tasks, instead of a list of twenty or thirty things. With too many things on your plate, you get overwhelmed and feel like a failure for not accomplishing all the things.
Tip #2 List Your Most Important or Least Favorite Task First
We tend to put off items we really don't feel like doing, that is just a human thing. Put the most important or least favorite tasks on your list first. Get it done, cross it off, and breeze through the much easier tasks throughout your day or week.
Tip #3 Motivate Your Tiny Humans to Clean
Learn how to unburden yourself from some of the household responsibilities and share them with your children. Don't miss out this simple idea for encouraging your children to clean and recognizing their efforts at the same time. Make cleaning up a little more fun and reward them for their chore. This way they will also take pleasure in their work.
Create a weekly system where your child completes the helper checklist and is then rewarded at the end of the week. It’s a total win-win for both the child and the parent. You decide the appropriate reward.
Tip #4 Prep Everything for the Next Day the Night Before
I don't know about your kids, but mine are absolutely sluggish in the morning. It drives me crazy. So I make sure to have everything that I can control planned out the night before so that the mornings can run a tad bit smoother.
If your kids take lunch to school, make lunches the night before. Plan out outfits the night before or two-to-three days in advance. Place everything they'll need by the door at night so they can just grab and go right out the door when it's time to leave for daycare/school.
Tip #5 Meal Prep is a Time management Must for busy moms
I have been scheduling all my family's meals with a weekly meal planner and it helps me determine what food to make and what nights to cook on. Using a meal planner has helped me be more organized and I love planning ahead.
Create your weekly meal plan for your family to stay ahead and worry about one less thing, instead of last minute drive through meals. Yes, the drive-thru is quicker, but you're also spending more money you probably don't really have. Plan ahead of time, store what you can by freezing it. Having your meals scheduled in advanced is a huge time saver, thus allowing you to focus more on your family and saving money in the bank.
Just to recap, if you want to stay completely focused on your most important tasks you'll need to break them down to make them manageable. Breaking down your list won't seem so overwhelming after you make a daily plan to keep you on track each day.
